too early." i'm glad you're up with us. i hope they're not up yet. i love them very much. it's monday, january 28th. we have a lot of news coming this morning including a bipartisan bill. a state of emergency in egypt where president morsi tries to regain some control after violent protests erupt in three major cities there. we'll have a live report from cairo. first, let's get to the news live at 5:30 a.m. here at "30 rock" in new york city. in a rare joint interview on cbs's "60 minutes," president obama sat alongside his departing secretary of state, hillary clinton, a one-time political rival who he now describes as one of his close advisors. she says she won't have a run in

2016. neither obama nor clinton were eager to look that far ahead. >> what's the -- i have to ask you, what's the date of the expiration on this endorsement. >> steve, i know -- >> i have to ask that question. i mean, come on. you're sitting here together. everybody in town is talking about it already and the interview -- and this is taking place. >> you know, steve, i've got to tell you, you guys in the press are incore ridgeable. i was literally inaugurated four days ago and you're talking about elections four years from now. >> and i am, as you know, steve, i'm still in politics and i'm forbidden from hearing these. >> if she wants this job, it will be interesting. on foreign policy, president obama defending himself from critics who say the u.s. has not been aggressive enough in using american power abroad. well, moammar gadhafi

probably does not agree with that assessment, or at least if he were around he would not agree with that assessment. when it comes to egypt, if it had not been for the leadership we showed, you might have seen a different outcome there. but also understanding that we do nobody a service when we leap before we look. here is a classic example of where our involvement, we want to make sure that not only does it enhance u.s. security but also that it is doing right by the people of syria and neighbors like israel that are going to be profoundly affected by it. and so it's true sometimes that we don't just shoot from the hip. secretary clinton's last day at the state department will be this friday. we have new developments on immigration reform. a bipartisan group of eight senators say they've reached an agreement on sweeping legislation that includes border security and a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the

country. senators john mccain and dick durbin say it's an issue which both sides are determined to compromise. >> how can we convince the republicans to a path to citizenship? >> i'll give you a little straight talk. look at the last election. look at the last election. we are losing dramatically the hispanic vote, which we think should be ours for a variety of reasons. and we've got to understand that. second of all, we can't go on forever with 11 million people living in this country in the shadows of an illegal status. we cannot forever have children who were born here, who were brought here by their parents when they were small children that live in the shadows as well. so i think the time is right. >> we are trying to work our way through some very difficult issues, but we are committed to a comprehensive approach to finally in this country have an immigration law that we can live with. we're putting as a high priority the unification of families, to make sure that families have a

chance to come together. the president has just outlined his own vision for immigration reform with a major speech tomorrow in las vegas, nevada. recent polling shows a majority of people are in favor of a plan allowing undocumented immigrants to become legal u.s. residents. another big policy issue on the white house agenda this morning, gun control. the president and vice president biden are meeting with police chiefs from all over the country including aurora, colorado and newtown, connecticut. senator diane feinstein who introduced legislation that includes a ban on assault weapons acknowledged it will be a challenge getting it through congress. >> this has always been an uphill fight. this has never been easy. this is the hardest of the hard. now will it only be assault weapons? no, most likely. there will be a package put together. if assault weapons is leftage a

of the judiciary, number two, i've been assured i'll be able to do it as an amendment on the floor which is the way i did it in 1993 so that doesn't particularly bother me. in an interview with the new republic president obama said he has a profound respect for hunting traditions adding both sides need to understand the other's position. the president addsed, quote, advocates of gun control have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes, end quote. asked if he's ever fired a gun. the president revealed at camp david we do skeet shooting all the time. we'll talk to the publisher and editor of the new republic, chris hughes and frank gore on "morning joe." in egypt the death toll has topped 50. thousands hit the streets after clashes with police left 30 people dade in port sayed. president muhammad morsi placed

areas under curfew and announced a state of emergency. that basically means the military can arrest people at will. nbc's a men my had a dean is in egypt. >> not too far away from where we are, clashes are still taking place here in cairo. down one of the major roads there have been skirmishes in cairo and areas that are under a curfew starting at 9:00 p.m. the president delivered a very angry message last night. he said those participating in these protests were undermining security. the problem is that's not resonating with a lot of people, particularly the political opposition that as you mention are expected to be invited to the presidential palace for a meeting. the political opposition is holding its own emergency talks to determine what position they're going to take. they're afraid or worried that

president morsi is using the cover of negotiations or talks without putting forth any concrete measures to end the crisis. there's a tremendous amount of political uncertainty in the air. live for us in cairo. be safe. thank you very much. meanwhile, authorities in brazil calling for a rapid investigation after more than 230 people were killed when a fire broke out at a crowded nightclub in the southern part of the country. witnesses say the band's on stage pyrotechnic triggered the inferno. they were rushing towards one door. the entrance actually apparently was closed off after security guards thought there was a fight and customers were skipping out on their bar tabs. police say most of the victims died of smoke inhalation. the club was hosting a party from a group of students from a nearby university who were celebrating the end of their summer break. kind of reminds people of nearly ten years ago in the u.s. when a

fire ripped through a nightclub in rhode island killing 100 people. like the tragedy in brazil, pyrotechnics used as a stage prop triggered that disaster. almost ten years inside of a couple weeks. now in business. all three major indices posting their fourth consecutive week of gains. the s&p 500 closing above 1600 points for the first time in more than five years. let's go to cnbc's steve cedric, my colleague in london. steve, people want to know if this is going to keep going? >> we have seen eight straight days of gains on the s&p. we haven't seen that in eight years. the props for the market show that hopes for a debt ceiling will happen. germany and china are looking pretty good. you mention the corporate earnings. 68% of the companies are beating expectations. the questions you raise are very relevant. questions about whether the etf

money is still coming into the market. durable goods and home sales and on wednesday we get the gdp figures which could keep the rally. >> we always keep tabs on the auto industry. pretty big news overnight from toyota? >> yes. they're number one globally between 2008 and 2010 in terms of vehicles sold. they got that crown back again this year in 2012 with 9.75 million vehicles sold. what's amazing about their retaking the number one position is they did it without china. they saw a 4.9% drop in china because of a territorial dispute between china and japan. they are looking for above average growth in 2013. very impressive status. >> steve, thank you very much. steve sedgwick, live in london. let us know why you're awake. give us an e-mail or tweet
